Curzon Ashton Reserves v Colne Match Report

It had been a long seven weeks but finally the young reserve side of Curzon got to play and much credit has to go to the management team of Gus Blair, Mike Meakin, Emma Jenks and the players for sticking together and training hard.

Ironically Colne was the last game that the reserves took part in seeing Curzon knock Colne out of the divisional league cup 6 goals to 2 back on the 7th of January 2012.

Curzon settled the better in the first quarter of the game with Liam Bromley-Blackburn coming close with a header, but overall although Curzon’s approached play was good at times, the final ball was letting them down. Alex Jones was the next on target after Tom Keegan broke down the right but his shot never troubled keeper Bobby Harris. Colne’s first good chance came on 18 minutes when Alex Grice found himself in space at the back post but his effort was weak and Curzon’s keeper Aaron Buckley-Smith was easily down to save comfortably.

Just before the half an hour mark Curzon lost Bromley-Blackburn due to injury and they had to play for ten minutes with ten men with the influential James Constantine having to drop into the back four from his midfield role and Colne had their best spell of the half with Jason Barraclough just shooting over the bar from 18 yards out.

With Bromley-Blackburn back on Curzon regained their shape and Jones again was released after some good inter-passing play, but he just could not find the power in his shot to trouble Harris, both sides went in at half time level pegging but it was a good 45 minutes for Curzon who needed to brush off their cobwebs.

In the second minute (47) of the second half Ryan Higginson finished off a great move by shooting low to the far post to beat Harris in the Colne goal and give Curzon the lead. Curzon should have then gone onto win the game, two more chances went begging, Higginson at the keepers near post should have done better but wasted his chance by hitting it straight at the keeper and then following a great ball by Jones to play in Keegan down the right saw Keegan, cut-in onto his left foot and fire just wide of the post.

But with Curzon’s inability to get a second goal Colne punished then with a great effort on 67 minutes when Barraclough found himself on the edge of the box, his low drive to the far post had Buckley-Smith well beaten.

Curzon who introduced three new debutants for todays game replaced Higginson and with Matthew Dell who’s first touch saw him make space just inside the box, but he dragged his shot wide, Jordan Wright also had a long range effort which was on target but Harris held it well. Curzon were producing some good attacking football without hurting Colne in the final third which gave Colne hope and they still threatened Curzon at times especially down the left.

On 79th minute debutant Jerome Steele on for the injured Bromley at half time was unlucky to see the ball hit his hands as he lifted them up to protect his face from an incoming shot which resulted in Colne being awarded a penalty, Ben Bridson stepped up and coolly slotted past Buckley-Smith.

This was a blow for Curzon but in the last 10 minutes they created two chances to draw level, Wright again went close with another long range effort and then Steele could have made himself an instant hero but his header went the wrong side of the post. After losing Bromley-Blackburn at half time Curzon then lost their other centre half Rory Bradbury to injury which saw Ryan Wood make his debut.

Although it’s not about winning but developing the young players at the club, Curzon were disappointed that they lost this game and although some players worked their socks off some were struggling with their enforced 7 week break. However they have now a good runs of games ahead starting with an away trip to Kendal this coming Wednesday (29th Feb) to get their game back on track before they take on Fleetwood Town in the league Cup.
